Service eligibility and regional restrictions
PuppyIP serves only compliant overseas businesses and their authorized personnel. Proxy services are not available in mainland China. The service may only be used for lawful business activities outside mainland China. Use of this service within mainland China is prohibited.
Hosting a proxy IP or server overseas does not change these restrictions. The service must not be provided to end users in mainland China through relaying, forwarding, sharing or resale. Before use, read the Terms of Service.
Key Takeaways
- Drive being able to read a spreadsheet does not mean the Sheets editing connector is enabled. Check the connector first when you need in-place changes.
- The sidebar asks before editing by default. Check the proposed cell range before approving the action.
- Use two rows of sample data to verify reading, editing, and results first. A reply saying “completed” is not proof of success.
Turn “organize this” into a task with verifiable results
Before choosing an entry point, write down the result you need: an explanation of a column of numbers, or changes saved to the original sheet. Replace “help me organize this” with a specific action, such as “explain the return rate without changing any content” or “add a total column to the specified worksheet and check three samples.”
Prepare the file link and target range, and record which values should stay unchanged. If several people are editing simultaneously, agree on the area for this task and record its starting data. This provides a stable reference for troubleshooting without blaming every unexpected result on the model.
From Claude chat: enable Sheets and specify the Google file
The Google Sheets editing connector (beta) is separate from Drive. Enable Sheets under Connectors in the chat plus menu and paste the Google spreadsheet link. To create a new file, explicitly say Google Sheets; a generic request for a “spreadsheet” may produce a local file. Existing Google file permissions still apply.
Include the worksheet name in your request, for example: “Check only the calculations in E2:E3 on the Sales sheet, and explain any problems first.” After the response, check whether it addresses the specified range. If it answers a different question, correct the target before continuing. Be especially careful with files sharing the same name.
From inside Google Sheets: install and open the sidebar
The sidebar beta is available to Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise, and the Google account must allow Marketplace app installation. After installing the official Claude app, choose Extensions → Claude → Open Claude in the file and sign in. The default Ask before edits setting waits for Allow.
The sidebar is limited to the current file; separately enabled connectors are an additional matter. If an administrator blocks installation, contact your Google Workspace administrator.
Before requesting changes, state the goal in one sentence and add the range that must not change. For example: “Fix only the formula in B4 on the Summary sheet; do not adjust other columns.” Compare the proposed action with the original request. If its scope expands, clarify the instruction first.
Verify two rows: correct reading, correct edit, correct result
Start with two rows in a test sheet containing no sensitive information. For example, quantities of 2 and 3 at a unit price of 10 should total 50. First ask Claude to explain where the data is and how to calculate it, then request a change to one specified formula cell.
After completion, return to Google Sheets and personally inspect that cell's formula and result, along with adjacent cells for unintended changes. Keep the expected value outside the request for an independent comparison. A text suggestion alone does not prove the original sheet was updated.
Once this small workflow works, expand gradually to the real task. Add one change at a time, such as more rows or a different worksheet, so a failure can be attributed to either the entry point or the new task. These are operating suggestions, not a claim that this article has tested your account.
If the entry point exists but nothing happens, check display, account, and task state
The live pane beside chat supports Chrome on the web or Claude Desktop with its built-in browser enabled. The Google session in the pane must match the connector account. If the pane is unavailable, choose Open in Google from the file card.
Use Chrome, Edge, or Safari for the sidebar. Firefox can open it but cannot complete operations. Closing the sidebar stops the current task.
Record exactly where it stops: finding the file, opening the pane, waiting for approval, or making no target change after approval. Retain the original error text, check the test file and action time, and change only one condition at a time. Do not repeatedly submit full batches of changes as trial and error, because you may lose track of which request produced a result.
Voice changes input, not the editing entry point
Claude voice mode can call connected tools while still following plan and tool rules. The Google file sidebar currently does not support voice dictation.
To give a task by voice, first confirm the client and underlying entry point, then add the link, worksheet name, and range in text. Being able to converse by voice on a phone does not establish support for editing Sheets on that phone. If a demonstration differs from your interface, compare accounts and entry points first to identify the missing condition.

Frequently Asked Questions
Claude says it is done. How can I confirm the original sheet changed?
Return to the target Google spreadsheet and check the specified cell's formula, result, and neighboring data. Verify a small sample with a known answer before handling real work.
What information helps when contacting an administrator or support?
Specify whether you use the chat connector or the in-file sidebar, and provide the client, time, step where it stopped, and redacted error. Describe the issue with a test file rather than sending the entire business spreadsheet.
