Gemini API Adds PPT, ODP and ODS: Why Only the First Sheet Is Read

Gemini API reads Office files according to their format: some are rendered as page or slide images, some are extracted as text, and spreadsheets are limited to the first sheet.

Service eligibility and regional restrictions

PuppyIP serves only compliant overseas businesses and their authorized personnel. Proxy services are not available in mainland China. The service may only be used for lawful business activities outside mainland China. Use of this service within mainland China is prohibited.

Hosting a proxy IP or server overseas does not change these restrictions. The service must not be provided to end users in mainland China through relaying, forwarding, sharing or resale. Before use, read the Terms of Service.

Key Takeaways

  • DOC, PPT and ODP are rendered as page or slide images. DOCX, DOTX, ODT and PPTX are read as whole-file text, so charts and layout may not be preserved.
  • XLSX and XLS expose CSV cell values from the first sheet, without formulas or formatting. ODS provides data and formulas from its first sheet.
  • Other workbook sheets are ignored. Move the sheet you need to the front or save it as a separate file.
  • Direct inputs and function-returned files use the matching file format and MIME type; GenerateContent and Interactions have separate function-result structures.

First check whether the file is read as images or text

In its November 5, 2026 Gemini API changelog, Google announced input support for PPT, ODP and ODS, plus page-image processing for DOC. The changelog also says DOC, PPT and ODP are rendered as page or slide images, while ODS provides data and formulas from its first sheet. The entry gives a publication date, but no exact activation time, timezone or account-by-account rollout details.

When a chart is missing, check the input format before assuming the file is damaged. Page images give the model visual content for layouts, charts and images. Text extraction can retain words without retaining page layout or chart appearance. An image-based path makes visual content available, but does not guarantee that every complex chart will be read correctly.

Check the processing path for each Office format

Word: Each page in DOC (application/msword) is rendered as an image. DOCX (application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document), DOTX (application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.template) and ODT (application/vnd.oasis.opendocument.text) are read as whole-file text; DOCX also includes embedded images. These three formats are not rendered as page images, so visual elements such as layout and charts may not be preserved.

Presentations: PPT (application/vnd.ms-powerpoint) and ODP (application/vnd.oasis.opendocument.presentation) are rendered as slide images. PPTX (application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.presentationml.presentation) is read as whole-file text and includes embedded images, but slides are not rendered as images. Its layout or charts may therefore be lost.

Spreadsheets: XLSX (application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.spreadsheetml.sheet) and XLS (application/vnd.ms-excel) expose only the first sheet, converted to CSV cell values without formulas or formatting. ODS (application/vnd.oasis.opendocument.spreadsheet) also reads only the first sheet, but provides its data and formulas.

Workbooks are limited to the first sheet

Other sheets are ignored. Even if the data you need is on the second or a later sheet, the model will not switch to it just because the workbook contains it. Check which sheet holds the data for this analysis, then move it to the first position.

You can also save the needed sheet as a separate file. With XLSX or XLS input, expect cell values rather than formulas or formatting; ODS provides the data and formulas from its first sheet. After rearranging or splitting the workbook, check that the final file starts with the content you want analyzed.

Direct inputs and the Files API use the same format rules

Office and OpenDocument files can be sent inline or supplied through the Files API. Both require a MIME type matching the actual file format; changing the declared type does not convert the file. The request structure depends on the API: the Interactions guide cited here uses document content blocks, while GenerateContent requests must follow their own API reference.

The document-processing rules do not change based on whether a file is sent directly or supplied through the Files API. Changing the input path does not bring an ignored worksheet into context or turn text extraction into page-image rendering. Documents returned by functions follow the same parsing rules as direct inputs.

Choose the function-result structure for the API in use

The changelog also distinguishes two function-result structures. GenerateContent function response parts can now contain Office and OpenDocument files, and can use fileData to return a Files API URI. displayName is available on both inlineData and fileData.

Interactions function_result steps instead support document, audio and video content blocks, using inline data or a uri. These are separate API contracts with different fields and content types. Check the reference for the API you selected; do not copy a field from one interface into the other. The cited multimodal function-response guide describes support for the Gemini 3 series, with video blocks in v1beta and v1alpha. This does not establish compatibility for every older model or SDK.

Check the model, API version and account before deployment

The update does not announce a change to pricing, regional eligibility or quota rules, and it does not list every supported model or account in this entry. Before deployment, check the current documentation for the model, API version and account you actually use. File-format support alone does not establish availability for every model or region.

Existing file-size and page limits still apply; the Gemini web or mobile app upload limits should not be applied to the API. Use must also meet the selected service’s regional, account and billing rules. Changing the network exit does not change those conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

If ODS formulas reach the model, will the API recalculate the whole workbook?

The documentation says that data and formulas from the first sheet are read. It does not promise to recalculate dependencies or execute the entire workbook. If calculation results matter, calculate and verify the target sheet in the original spreadsheet tool first.

Will renaming a PPTX file to .ppt make every slide an image?

Changing an extension or declaring a mismatched MIME type does not convert the actual file format. If another format is needed, export it through an editor that supports that format, then check the resulting charts and text.

Do these rules also apply to Gemini on the web and mobile app?

This article covers Gemini API file inputs and function results. Previewing, editing, exporting and upload eligibility in the Gemini app follow separate product rules; do not transfer one set of rules to the other.
