Using Shopify Canvas: check theme, app and Markets limits before building with Sidekick

Canvas lets merchants view whole-store templates on one canvas and have Sidekick modify theme code. At this article’s check, however, it remained early access for selected stores: third-party themes were unsupported, app blocks/app embeds could not be added or configured in Canvas, and customization by Markets was unavailable. Check critical functionality in a duplicate before deciding to publish.

Service eligibility and regional restrictions

PuppyIP serves only compliant overseas businesses and their authorized personnel. Proxy services are not available in mainland China. The service may only be used for lawful business activities outside mainland China. Use of this service within mainland China is prohibited.

Hosting a proxy IP or server overseas does not change these restrictions. The service must not be provided to end users in mainland China through relaying, forwarding, sharing or resale. Before use, read the Terms of Service.

Key Takeaways

  • The October 1, 2026 official announcement said rollout would proceed over the following days; the help center still marked early access for selected stores. The existing theme editor had not been replaced.
  • Access is through Online Store / Themes in desktop Shopify admin. The plan must include theme customization, and staff need Online store > Themes > Edit code permission.
  • Only Shopify-developed themes and custom themes are supported; third-party themes are not. Themes edited in Canvas cannot have their files downloaded or receive theme updates.
  • Canvas cannot add or configure app blocks/app embeds or customize themes for different markets. Merchants needing these capabilities should check compatibility first.
  • Autosave does not expose changes to customers. Publishing or updating requires reviewing changes and clicking Publish changes; restoring a historical version also needs another publish to change the live store.

What Canvas launched, and who can use it now

Shopify’s October 1 official announcement introduces Canvas as a zoomable canvas placing whole-store templates side by side, allowing merchants to edit details directly or describe changes to Sidekick. Sidekick modifies actual theme files; it does not merely generate a design image. Demonstrated speed and effects are vendor claims, not delivery guarantees for every store.

The announcement describes rollout over the following days, while the current help center explicitly limits it to early access for selected stores. Shopify also says Canvas has not replaced the existing editor. This article has not verified any particular store’s eligibility. A missing entry point does not establish an account fault, nor guarantee that upgrading a plan or changing IP addresses will grant access.

Check four eligibility conditions before adoption

Under the official requirements, Canvas is desktop-only; the store plan must include theme customization; staff need Online store > Themes > Edit code permission; and the theme must be Shopify-developed or a custom theme. Third-party themes are unsupported. Verify the theme’s origin rather than directly converting an existing paid theme into Canvas.

After downgrading to a plan without theme customization, Canvas-edited themes can be viewed but not edited or published. Public guidance gives no availability date for every region or store, or universal application switch. This article is not a pricing promise for a new paid feature. Check your actual admin entry point and current plan first.

Start with a new theme or duplicate, retaining the live theme

The official creation and customization guide provides two paths: click New on the Online Store themes page and describe the brand and store to Sidekick, creating an unpublished theme in the library; or choose Duplicate in Canvas from a supported theme’s menu to create a copy first. Interface wording can vary by language and rollout stage; follow your admin.

The duplicate is edited only in Canvas, while the original remains in the theme library for the original editor. They are independent, and changes do not sync automatically between them. Name the duplicate clearly and record the current live theme and latest published version, avoiding publication of an old copy missing new product layouts or recent changes. These steps come from public documentation; this article has made no store changes.

Cross-border stores should especially check apps, markets, translation and updates

The current requirements page says Canvas cannot add or configure app blocks or app embeds, customize themes for different markets, or directly translate theme content; use Translate & Adapt for translation. Stores relying on review, subscription or form apps, or market-specific layouts, should check actual results in duplicate previews individually. “AI can write code” does not establish support for these integrations.

Canvas-edited themes do not receive theme updates and their files cannot be downloaded. Manual block addition is unsupported; ask Sidekick to add blocks. Another easily misunderstood boundary is rollouts: a Canvas theme can be added to a rollout as a replacement for the main theme, but cannot be edited or opened from the rollout; return to Canvas. The current requirements support this replacement use, so a blanket “Rollouts are entirely unsupported” is incorrect.

Change one goal at a time, then inspect real interactions

In Work with Sidekick, describe a specific goal, such as adjusting only mobile spacing between product-page images and the buy button. Select the relevant block first for local changes. You can directly edit block settings and preview text, or global theme settings such as colors and fonts. If some older themes do not allow direct preview-text editing, use block settings or ask Sidekick.

Acceptance should at least check links and interactions on the homepage, product pages, collection pages and cart at desktop, tablet and mobile widths, especially dependent apps and market workflows. A visually correct canvas does not establish store functionality. Keep the duplicate until compatibility checks finish rather than exposing a whole-store redesign directly to customers.

Autosave, publishing and restoration are separate actions

Canvas autosaves and has no separate save button. Changes to unpublished themes appear only in Canvas and previews. Even when editing the currently published theme, customers continue seeing the old version until you click Update, inspect changes and click Publish changes. New themes use Publish, followed by the same Publish changes confirmation. Open the storefront separately to inspect what customers actually see.

Manual edits support Undo/Redo, but Sidekick changes clear prior undo history, so Undo cannot be relied on to reverse them or earlier manual edits. Ask Sidekick to change things back, or inspect historical versions such as Last published in Theme history / Version history, preview and Restore. Restore replaces the current Canvas version; customers see the restoration only after another publish. For publishing errors, read the error list, optionally use Fix with Sidekick, then preview and review changes again.

Handle missing access or failed edits according to their cause

First check early access, desktop device, plan, Edit code permission and theme origin. Missing access, third-party themes, unsupported app configuration and network timeouts are different issues. Do not repeatedly switch accounts or IPs instead of checking eligibility. Only with DNS, TLS or connection timeout evidence should you consult the proxy connection troubleshooting checklist for the network layer. Network tools cannot change platform eligibility or theme compatibility.

If you depend on multi-market customization, downloadable theme files, ongoing theme updates or critical app blocks, retain the current editor and live theme until official documentation explicitly supports those needs, then reassess the same plan. Record the theme, required features, errors and owner. Substantively update this checklist when early-access, app, Markets, download or update rules change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can every Shopify store use Canvas now?

Do not assume so. At the October 2, 2026 check, the official help page still described early access for selected stores and desktop-only use. Specific store access and rollout completion were not verified.

Can third-party themes be duplicated directly into Canvas?

The current requirements support only Shopify-developed and custom themes, not third-party themes. Verify theme origin and eligibility first.

Does Canvas autosave change the live store immediately?

No. Before customers see changes, click Publish or Update, inspect changes, then click Publish changes. Autosave and live publishing are different.

Does Canvas support app blocks and theme customization for different Markets?

It currently cannot add or configure app blocks/app embeds or customize by market. Check compatibility when these capabilities are needed rather than assuming support from AI demonstrations.

Can Canvas themes be downloaded, receive updates or join a rollout?

Themes edited in Canvas cannot have their files downloaded or receive theme updates. They can join a rollout as a replacement for the main theme, but editing must return to Canvas and cannot be opened from the rollout.

Can Undo restore a bad Sidekick change?

Sidekick changes clear undo history. Ask Sidekick to revert, or preview a historical version in Theme history and Restore it. Customers see the restored version only after it is published again.
