Shopify compare-at prices for AI agents: settings and preview

Shopify Catalog can now send a product’s compare-at price to AI shopping agents so they can recognize a markdown. Check your Compare-at switch first: when it is on, Catalog sends only a reference price above the current price; when it is off, Catalog sends only the current price. The admin preview does not prove what an AI channel actually displays.

Service eligibility and regional restrictions

PuppyIP serves only compliant overseas businesses and their authorized personnel. Proxy services are not available in mainland China. The service may only be used for lawful business activities outside mainland China. Use of this service within mainland China is prohibited.

Hosting a proxy IP or server overseas does not change these restrictions. The service must not be provided to end users in mainland China through relaying, forwarding, sharing or resale. Before use, read the Terms of Service.

Key Takeaways

  • A compare-at price is a reference price alongside the current selling price. With the switch on, Catalog sends it to AI agents only when it is higher than the current price.
  • Review Compare-at in the Shopify Catalog mapping page under the Agentic sales channel, then save your choice. Do not assume every store starts with the switch on.
  • Changing how your store uses compare-at prices later does not automatically change the switch selection. Review the setting separately.
  • Preview can show Catalog’s strikethrough price and discount badge. Processing takes time, and a preview is not evidence of AI display, citation or sales.

What can AI shopping agents see now?

On October 9, 2026, Shopify announced that Shopify Catalog now shares product compare-at prices with AI shopping agents. A compare-at price is a reference price shown alongside the current selling price, often with a strikethrough. Previously, agents reading Catalog saw only the current price, without the markdown comparison shown on the storefront.

The change gives agents more pricing information. It does not mean that an AI channel will necessarily display a discount.

The announcement says agents can recognize a markdown, while the Help Center says they might use the data to display strikethrough pricing. The actual presentation is still up to the channel.

The Help Center says all stores can customize Catalog product data. This does not establish eligibility for every AI channel, region or account. The two sources reviewed do not list extra fees or a country-by-country eligibility matrix, so they do not support a promise of free activation or universal channel coverage.

Why might a product still have no compare-at price?

With the switch on, Shopify Catalog sends a compare-at price only when it is higher than the product’s current price. An equal or lower reference price does not meet that condition. Filling in the field and turning on the switch are not enough to prove that a particular product will send a compare-at price.

With the switch off, Catalog sends only the current price. Each store starts with a default selection; the announcement does not mean that every store’s switch is on. Check the actual setting before deciding whether you want agents to receive eligible reference prices.

There is another easy detail to miss: changing how your store uses compare-at prices later does not automatically change its existing switch selection. Treat Compare-at as a separate item to review when you update pricing or promotions.

Where is the switch, and what should you check before saving?

First, in your Shopify admin, go to Sales channels and open Agentic. In Sources, find Shopify Catalog, click the icon beside it, and select Review product data mapping.

Second, turn the switch in the Compare-at section on or off. Turn it on to share eligible reference prices, or off to send only current prices. This selects which pricing information is shared; it does not create a new product discount.

Third, if you want to check one product, open the Preview tab and use the Product drop-down to choose a product whose compare-at price is higher than its current price. With the switch on, the preview shows the reference price with a strikethrough beside the current price and a percentage-discount badge.

Fourth, click Save once the selection matches your store’s intent. Then review the saved switch state and the chosen product’s pricing. A correct preview does not prove that an AI channel has already synchronized and displayed the change: Shopify says changes are processed with a delay.

With a current price of 80 and a reference price of 100, what is shared?

Suppose a product has a current price of 80 and a compare-at price of 100 in the same currency, and the merchant turns Compare-at on. This is a hypothetical example explaining the rule; no store operation was performed. Because 100 is higher than 80, the reference price meets Catalog’s sharing condition and can give an agent the markdown comparison.

For these example prices, the reduction is 20%: the difference between 100 and 80 divided by 100. The Help Center describes a Preview that strikes through 100, keeps the current price of 80, and shows a discount badge. It does not promise that every AI interface will present the same layout.

If the switch is off, Catalog sends only the current price of 80. If the compare-at price is also 80, turning the switch on still does not satisfy the higher-than-current-price condition. Check the field and eligibility rule before treating a missing strikethrough price as a synchronization failure.

If nothing changes immediately, which two layers should you separate?

The first layer is the product data and mapping selection inside Catalog. Check that the switch was saved, that the product’s compare-at price is higher than its current price, and that Preview shows the intended price relationship. These checks can identify an input or configuration issue; they do not prove external display results.

The second layer is what the AI channel actually displays. Shopify says Preview is not an exact indicator of AI-channel presentation and that changes are processed with a delay. The reviewed documentation provides no fixed completion time in minutes, so one immediate check cannot establish either a fault or completed synchronization.

The direct value is that an eligible price comparison can be shared. Product discovery, AI citations, clicks and sales remain separate outcomes that need their own evidence. Turning on the pricing switch guarantees none of them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is UCP’s list_price the current price a customer will pay?

Do not read it that way. UCP stands for Universal Commerce Protocol. Shopify’s documentation says an eligible compare-at price is shared through the list_price field in its Variant specification. Here, it is the reference price; it should not replace the current selling price or be treated as the final checkout total.

Do I have to remap descriptions or combined listings to use this switch?

These tasks do not have to be bundled together. Product fields, Compare-at and Custom combined listings are separate optional sections of the mapping page. You can address the price-sharing choice without changing description sources or product grouping just to enable the switch.

Does switching it off guarantee that AI channels immediately remove an old strikethrough price?

Shopify states that Catalog sends only the current price when the switch is off. It also says processing is delayed and Preview does not represent actual AI-channel display. The reviewed sources do not promise immediate removal of old pricing displays across channels, so the switch is not an instant-withdrawal guarantee.
