Hydrogen 2026-10: Keep Your Framework, Check Server and Hosting Requirements

Shopify announced the general availability of Hydrogen 2026-10 on October 14, 2026. It can add Shopify commerce features to an existing project while keeping its pages, routing, and design. The project must be able to run server code: browser-only applications and applications that produce only static output are outside this integration path.

Service eligibility and regional restrictions

PuppyIP serves only compliant overseas businesses and their authorized personnel. Proxy services are not available in mainland China. The service may only be used for lawful business activities outside mainland China. Use of this service within mainland China is prohibited.

Hosting a proxy IP or server overseas does not change these restrictions. The service must not be provided to end users in mainland China through relaying, forwarding, sharing or resale. Before use, read the Terms of Service.

Key Takeaways

  • Hydrogen handles commerce features such as carts, product options, and search. Your framework continues to handle routing, data loading, and rendering.
  • Start with a React Router or Next.js template, or integrate an existing server application. Customer accounts, analytics, and consent features in Vercel Shop are opt-in.
  • Shopify says Oxygen remains free. That does not establish that Shopify plans, payments, or other hosting services are free.
  • Existing Hydrogen storefronts keep working and do not need an immediate rebuild. Coding-agent skills should stay in sync with the installed version.

The library approach can save an existing storefront rebuild

The October 14 release follows a developer preview in June and seven subsequent releases. The new Hydrogen is a library for different JavaScript frameworks; a project no longer needs to adopt the entire React Router framework structure used by the previous Hydrogen.

Hydrogen provides commerce features including carts, product variants, collection filters, predictive search, Markets and buyer currencies, consent-aware analytics, Shop Pay, and customer accounts. Your framework still handles routing, data loading, and rendering, and you keep your design. This does not automatically produce a complete storefront.

Check server support before integrating an existing project

The getting-started documentation requires an application that can run server code. Hydrogen handles requests before they reach the application router. An application that runs only in the browser or produces only static files cannot use this integration path directly.

An existing project can keep its pages, components, and design system. Shopify lists examples for Astro, Nuxt, SvelteKit, and SolidStart, among others. A framework name alone does not meet the requirement: for example, an Astro project configured to produce only static files would still need to address server support first.

Compare the two starters if you need a storefront starting point

For a new project, the choices include a React Router starter with Oxygen and a Next.js starter with Vercel Shop. Both use the same Hydrogen package and provide starting pages for a home page, collections, products, search, and a cart. You can move the application to another host later.

You can change or remove the template structure and styling. Customer accounts, analytics, and consent features in Vercel Shop are opt-in, so do not assume they are enabled by default. The React Router starter can use mock.shop demonstration data until you connect a store.

Give your coding agent skills for the installed version

Shopify documents npx @shopify/hydrogen@latest setup as a setup entry point and includes 20 coding-agent skills matched to the project version. The skills help an agent compose and extend existing commerce capabilities. Developers still need to make decisions about pages, branding, and checkout.

After upgrading Hydrogen, the documentation provides npx @shopify/hydrogen skills sync to bring the skills into line with the package version. Hydrogen does not include a UI component library; the project remains responsible for its existing components or custom interface.

Existing Hydrogen storefronts do not need an immediate rebuild

Shopify explicitly says existing Hydrogen storefronts will keep working and that there is nothing you need to do today. The name 2026-10 identifies this release; it does not establish a mandatory migration deadline for older storefronts.

When you are ready, the migration skill can keep your pages and routes while replacing the commerce integration code. A real project should still check its existing cart, account, and analytics behavior. Those checks are migration preparation, rather than a requirement to rewrite the entire site.

Choose a host and check each service’s free allowance separately

Shopify says the application can run on a suitable host and that Oxygen remains free. The React Router starter can also be deployed to Oxygen through the Shopify admin. Before choosing another platform, confirm that it supports the server code and deployment method your application needs.

The release and getting-started documentation do not provide a complete Shopify plan matrix, country eligibility list, Shop Pay availability matrix, or third-party hosting price list. Free Oxygen hosting does not mean the store, payments, and every hosting resource are free. Check the terms of the services you intend to use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a shopping agent place an order without buyer confirmation?

This release does not establish that permission. In browsers that support WebMCP, an agent can search the catalog and update a cart. The Shopify Checkout complete_checkout tool submits an order after the buyer confirms. Shopify does not describe it as a way to bypass confirmation or charge a buyer automatically.

Do apps, interfaces, and agents share the same cart rules?

Hydrogen uses the same standard storefront actions as Liquid themes, allowing compatible apps, interfaces, and agents to share a cart contract. This is a compatibility design, not a promise that every third-party app has been verified.

Must an existing React Router project move to Next.js?

No. Shopify provides both React Router and Next.js starters and explicitly says existing Hydrogen storefronts keep working. Check server support and the needs of your current project; a new starter is not a reason by itself to change frameworks.
