Service eligibility and regional restrictions
PuppyIP serves only compliant overseas businesses and their authorized personnel. Proxy services are not available in mainland China. The service may only be used for lawful business activities outside mainland China. Use of this service within mainland China is prohibited.
Hosting a proxy IP or server overseas does not change these restrictions. The service must not be provided to end users in mainland China through relaying, forwarding, sharing or resale. Before use, read the Terms of Service.
Key Takeaways
- Shopify's Help Center says €150 or less; its October 24 changelog says under €150. The two pages do not agree on parcels worth exactly €150.
- M-PID is supplied automatically from the Shopify product variant ID. Use an existing standardized barcode for S-PID and the manufacturer's code, or an applicable own product code, for NS-PID.
- Declare Y081 only when there is no GTIN, EAN, UPC, or ISBN. Shopify says enabling this declaration prevents an S-PID from being sent even if a standard barcode is saved on the variant.
- Identifiers are saved per product variant. HS codes determine some exemptions; merchants cannot mark products exempt manually.
- From November 1, 2026, a Shopify label cannot be bought for an item within the Help Center's stated €150 scope if it lacks a standardized identifier and has no Y081 declaration.
What needs to be ready by November 1, and why recheck the €150 limit?
Shopify's Help Center says that from November 1, 2026, items in parcels sent from outside the EU to EU customers and worth €150 or less need product identifiers. Missing information can lead to a parcel being held or rejected at customs. Shopify Shipping and Managed Markets labels carry saved identifiers into customs documents.
But Shopify's October 24 changelog describes the scope as parcels worth under €150, without clearly covering an item worth exactly €150. The European Commission's current Access2Markets news page says PIDs must be declared for import distance sales from November 1 but does not state a value cap in that section. The Commission's explanatory PDF says the scope is €150 or less and notes that it is amending Annex B to clarify the limit; B2B flows are in principle outside the scope it describes. Confirm the boundary for exactly €150, over-€150, or B2B shipments with Shopify, your carrier, or your customs broker.
This guide separates Shopify's product-data workflow from the final scope of customs rules. Do not treat Shopify label checks as a universal requirement for every carrier, or turn a platform notice into one legal rule for every transaction.
What goes in M-PID, S-PID, and NS-PID?
M-PID is the identifier a merchant or platform uses for a product. Shopify supplies it from the product variant ID, so merchants do not need to enter it separately. Keep each size, color, or package variant linked to its own product data.
S-PID is an available standardized barcode, such as a GTIN, EAN, UPC, or ISBN. Choose the matching barcode type on the relevant variant. Shopify's Help Center also says a custom barcode type is accepted only when its contents are a valid 8-, 12-, 13-, or 14-digit GTIN.
NS-PID is a non-standardized product code from the manufacturer, producer, or supplier, such as a model, part, or style number. The Help Center gives a fallback order when an NS-PID barcode is missing: standardized barcode, another barcode, SKU, then variant ID. The October 24 changelog also says an own product code or SKU can be used. Check which value Shopify actually stores and sends for each variant; do not substitute an order number or an unrelated code.
When should you use Y081 if there is no standard barcode?
Use the declaration only when the product truly has no standardized identifier such as a GTIN, EAN, UPC, or ISBN. On the product or variant page, open the Shipping area, select More details, and declare that no standardized identifier exists. Shopify labels this declaration Y081.
Do not enable Y081 just to clear a warning when a standard barcode exists. Shopify's Help Center says that after this declaration is turned on, no S-PID is sent to customs for the item, even if a standard barcode is saved on the variant. Check each variant against the actual product; a one-off or handmade item still needs to be checked for whether it really lacks a standard barcode and what HS code applies.
Complete each variant and check HS-code exemptions
Identifiers are stored on product variants, not as one store-wide value. In Products, open a product and its specific variant. In Barcodes, enter the barcode printed on the package or the manufacturer's model, part, or style code. For many products, use a CSV import or the bulk editor.
Shopify lists exemptions for some goods based on HS-code ranges, including unprocessed agricultural or perishable goods, certain handmade goods, and antiques, collectibles, works of art, stamps, and coins. The exemption is triggered by the variant's HS code; merchants cannot mark a product exempt themselves. Verify the HS code for the actual item instead of relying only on its title or store category.
For variants of the same product, confirm that each barcode and manufacturer code matches its brand, specification, and package. A saved value proves only that Shopify has product data; it does not by itself prove the carrier received the right fields or customs accepted the declaration.
How Shopify labels check the data, and what if you buy labels elsewhere?
When you buy a label in Shopify for a parcel going to the EU, identifiers saved on the product are added to the customs documents and sent to the carrier. The Help Center says that from November 1, an item within its €150-or-less scope cannot have a label bought in Shopify if it is missing a standardized identifier and has no Y081 declaration. You can edit customs details from the label page; entries linked to a product are saved back to that product. Custom items that are not linked to a product remain on that customs declaration.
If you buy labels outside Shopify, Shopify does not specify one upload route or file format for every logistics service. Use your existing carrier, customs broker, or fulfillment workflow to confirm that product identifiers travel with the order and ask how missing fields are handled. A filled Shopify product page alone does not show that an outside system received the data.
A short pre-shipment checklist
Filter for products shipped from outside the EU to EU destinations, then list each product variant. Check the Shopify variant ID, any standard barcode, manufacturer code, and actual HS code. Only declare Y081 after confirming that the item has no standard barcode.
Sample the customs details on a Shopify Shipping or Managed Markets label and confirm they match the variant. If you buy labels elsewhere, ask the carrier or broker to verify how it receives the fields. For shipments worth exactly €150, over €150, or handled B2B, retain Shopify's Help Center wording, its changelog wording, and the carrier or broker's conclusion instead of treating one page as the final declaration rule.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do these PIDs apply to a parcel worth exactly €150?
Shopify's Help Center says €150 or less, while its changelog says under €150. They differ on exactly €150. The Commission's news page and explanatory PDF also do not use identical scope wording. Confirm the applicable requirement with Shopify, your carrier, or customs broker.
Do I have to enter the M-PID for every product?
No. Shopify uses the product variant ID for M-PID. Focus on the standardized S-PID barcode, manufacturer NS-PID, and a correct Y081 declaration when no standard barcode exists.
Can I enter any SKU when there is no GTIN?
Do not enter a temporary code that does not identify the product. Shopify's changelog says an own product code or SKU can be used as an NS-PID candidate; the Help Center also describes a fallback order when an NS-PID barcode is missing. Check the product and supply records for the value that will actually be sent for each variant.
Will Shopify send a saved standard barcode when Y081 is enabled?
Shopify's Help Center says it will not. When the no-standardized-identifier declaration is enabled, Shopify does not send an S-PID for the item even if a standard barcode is saved. Enable it only when no standard barcode exists.
Does completing the Shopify product data guarantee customs clearance?
No. Confirm that the carrier actually received the correct fields. Other declaration, product-compliance, or inspection requirements can still apply, and a successful save in Shopify does not mean customs accepted the shipment.
