Key Takeaways
- Shopify's October 27 notice says US and Canadian merchants can enable Auto-sync for published languages; an October 9 notice covered 12 other named markets.
- Auto-sync is off by default and enabled per language. It runs weekly, so switching it on does not complete the first translation immediately.
- The eight automatic-translation slots are in addition to the default language. Each automatically translated language uses one slot, and removing a language does not reset the limit.
- The Help Center still puts countries outside its listed markets in a row with at most two languages and no Auto-sync, but the same page says stores showing Translate now can use eight languages and Auto-sync.
- Manually written translations are not overwritten. Legal and policy pages cannot be translated automatically, and some default theme text only gets missing translations.
Which merchants are covered by the October 27 notice
Shopify's October 27 notice says merchants in the United States and Canada can enable Translate & Adapt Auto-sync for published languages. Shopify's October 9 notice had already listed Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
The two announcements describe market scope; they do not verify access for every store. This guide did not sign in to or inspect any store. Check your own Translate & Adapt app for the available options.
How weekly sync and the eight language slots work
Auto-sync is off by default and must be enabled separately for each language. Shopify says Auto-sync, the one-time Translate now action, or both for the same language use one of the eight automatic-translation slots. The Help Center says those eight languages are in addition to the store's default language.
The Help Center also says that after a language is translated automatically, you can't switch that automatic translation to another language; removing a language from your store doesn't reset the limit. Turning off Auto-sync stops future weekly updates for that language, but doesn't release an automatic-translation slot that has already been used.
Translations that you wrote or edited manually are not overwritten. The announcements raise the automatic-translation limit from two languages to eight, but check which options your store currently shows in the app.
Why the Help Center's country table still conflicts
The Shopify Help Center automatic translation page lists Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. It says stores in those 12 markets can translate up to eight languages automatically and use Auto-sync. Its “all other countries” row still says a maximum of two languages and no Auto-sync, which does not match the October 27 US and Canada notice.
The same Help Center page says that if Translate now appears in Translate & Adapt, a store can translate up to eight languages automatically and use Auto-sync even when its country is not listed. For any specific store, check whether Translate now and Auto-sync appear in the app. Neither the older table row nor an announcement alone proves an individual account's current access.
How to enable it and when the first translation runs
In Shopify Admin, open Apps > Translate & Adapt, select a published language, turn on Auto-sync translations, and confirm. Enable each other language separately. Turning off one language's toggle stops future automatic syncs for that language.
Turning on Auto-sync does not start the first translation immediately. The Help Center says it waits for the store's next scheduled weekly slot, which can be nearly a week away. For an unpublished language, the first translation waits until the next weekly slot after publication. Use Translate now for an earlier translation.
Which translations still need manual review
The Help Center says legal and policy pages cannot be translated automatically; translate them manually and check their accuracy. For some default theme text, automatic translation only adds missing translations and does not update existing ones. Review translated content before making it available to customers.
The eight-language limit and weekly schedule describe the automatic-translation workflow. They do not mean every page has been translated, legal text has been reviewed, or each source-content change appears on the storefront immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can every Shopify store in the US and Canada use Auto-sync now?
Shopify's October 27 notice covers US and Canadian merchants, but the Help Center's country table has not caught up, and this guide did not inspect individual accounts. Check whether Translate now and Auto-sync appear in Translate & Adapt.
Does Auto-sync translate as soon as I turn it on?
No. The Help Center says the first translation waits for the store's next weekly sync slot, which can be nearly a week away. For an unpublished language, the first sync waits until a weekly slot after publication. Use Translate now for an earlier update.
Does the eight-language limit include the default language, and can I reset it by removing a language?
The Help Center says the eight automatic-translation languages are in addition to the store's default language. Each automatically translated language uses one slot; Shopify also says removing a language does not reset the limit and you can't switch an automatic translation to a different language after translating it.
Will Auto-sync overwrite translations I wrote or edited manually?
Shopify says manually written or edited translations are not overwritten. For some default theme text, automatic translation adds missing translations but does not update existing ones.
Are legal and policy pages translated automatically?
No. The Help Center says legal and policy pages cannot be translated automatically and should be translated and reviewed manually.
